Lane channelizers & separators

The lane channelizer is a low-profile separator unit fixed to the road to divide two streams physically. A driver can ignore a painted line but feels the lane channelizer through the wheel — where the model profile and the layout allow it, its sloping sides let emergency vehicles cross, and a delineator, cat eye or flap mounts on top. It is low, modular and relocatable. Because its top socket accepts a vertical marker, the lane channelizer becomes one line that warns by contact and by eye. Technical features

Lane channelizers and separators are low-profile elements that physically divide two directions. A driver can ignore a painted line but feels a channelizer through the wheel. They are used on bus lanes, turning pockets and junction islands.

A channelizer and a delineator post do different jobs. The channelizer is a horizontal mass that warns through contact; the post is a vertical marker that warns through the eye. Most junction layouts use both: the channelizer as base, the post above it.

Spacing follows speed and geometry. The spacing comes from the project drawing: tighter on sharp diversions, wider on straight runs. The driver must see the next one before passing the one in front.

The fixing decides how permanent it is. It dowels down through its base plate: an expansion or chemical anchor in asphalt, a dowelled bolt in concrete. Adhesive-only fixing is not advisable for permanent work, because lateral force from heavy vehicles works it loose.

The reflective collar is washed once a year. As road dust and tyre marks build up the returned light falls. Night visibility drops quietly even while the body looks intact.

Three openings are protected on the layout drawing: the drainage path (a continuous run can trap water along the kerb, so gaps are left at gullies), side-road and cycle entries, and emergency-access openings. These three are marked before the spacing is calculated; the line is then fitted between them.

  • Bus lane and BRT. The lane channelizer keeps the bus lane clear of mixed traffic; a violation is felt through the wheel and lane discipline builds itself.
  • Cycle lane. The lane channelizer separates cyclists from traffic with a physical line; the delineator on top shows the line at night too.
  • Turning pocket and junction island. The lane channelizer funnels entry to one point; at the island nose it works together with the delineator.
  • Opposing-flow division. On an undivided section the lane channelizer separates opposing flows; it is a warning line, not a protection barrier.

How is the total dimension of a lane channelizer run worked out?

The assembled length is not derived from one module’s catalogue length: end modules, intermediate modules and the joint allowance are separate dimensions, and the post in the top socket changes the total height too.
