Lane guidance & delineation: the products

Roadside delineator posts

A roadside delineator post is the most basic piece of equipment telling a driver where the asphalt ends. It is set at regular intervals along interurban roads, on the exit of bends and along shoulders.

It works by its body in daylight and by its reflector at night. Where the snow plough blade and the sliding vehicle strike, a flexing body is preferred over concrete.

Lane channelizers & separators

Lane channelizers and separators are the low-profile elements that physically divide two directions. They are used on bus lanes, turning pockets and junction islands where a painted line is not enough.

A driver can ignore a line; a channelizer is felt through the wheel.

How to choose

The job of this family in one sentence: telling the driver where the road ends and where to go. The products work by their bodies in daylight and by their retroreflective material at night.

The choice starts with whether the line is permanent. Permanent routes take roadside delineators and utility marker posts. Temporary lines and lines that open from time to time favour flexible delineators and lane channelizers.

Items in this family are rarely bought alone. Bases, anchors and driving caps are ordered with the posts. Although the installation equipment belongs to another family it travels in the same shipment.

The commonest mistake is deciding spacing and height separately. They work together: closely spaced short posts and widely spaced tall posts do not deliver the same level of safety.

When asking for a quotation, state the route length, the number of bends, the ground type and the authority’s spacing rule if there is one.

Given those four, the count, the pallet plan and the container plan come out together.

Maintenance in this family happens once a year and at night. A reflector that looks sound in daylight may no longer return the headlamp beam. The check is made from a moving vehicle.

Spare stock is bought with the order. Spares from the same batch match the site exactly in colour and reflective class. Spares bought later leave the route looking patchy.
