Traffic barriers

The traffic barrier is used to separate a work area or a temporary route from traffic with a visual-physical line. The traffic barrier travels empty and is filled with water or sand on site; its coupling ends join the units into one line. It transports light, sets up fast and redeploys. Technical features

A traffic barrier travels empty and is filled on site. Empty, one person lifts it; filled with water or sand it reaches several hundred kilograms and stays put. Freight cost therefore follows volume, not weight.

The bodies interlock. An interlocked run behaves differently from separate blocks. On light contact the pieces do not scatter and the line flexes as a whole. Ramped end caps or warning panels fit at the ends.

Where freezing is a risk, sand replaces water. Water expands as it freezes and stresses the body. Sand neither freezes nor evaporates, but emptying it is laborious. Water suits layouts that move often, sand suits a layout that stays.

The commonest mistake is leaving the barrier empty. Without ballast it blows over and leaves the road at the first contact. Filling is not the last step of the installation; it is the installation.

The barrier is dried out after emptying. Water left inside grows algae and stains the body by the next season, and emptying before winter prevents both freezing and staining.

Relocation runs in three steps: drain first, then move, then check. A filled barrier is not lifted or dragged — dragging a filled body wears the base and the coupling ends. Before refilling at the new position, the cap, the drain plug and the couplings are checked in order; a missing plug means a leak that goes unnoticed in the first hour of filling.

A barrier emptied for winter and stored in shade lasts markedly longer than one left permanently in the open. Once cracks start the body no longer holds water and its ballast function ends, which is the point to replace it.

How are the length and turns of a traffic barrier run planned?

The assembled length is shorter than module length times count: the coupling overlap takes its share at every joint. The turning capacity — the permitted angle between two modules — varies by model and is stated on the datasheet. Couplings of different models or brands may not mate, so a run is built from one model. End caps and warning panels are separate order items.
