The GRP sign paneling profile is used to build the panel of the information signs that guide traffic on the road network. Profiles 20, 30 and 60 cm high join one above the other with a tongue-and-groove joint; the required sign size is built from these profiles and the reflective sheeting is bonded on top. GRP resists corrosion and is used with confidence where temperature swings are large; being light, it is easy to transport and install.

Installation

SP-300 profile layout: three stacked 300 mm modules, profile joint lines and the flat front face for reflective sheeting
Profile layout — each profile provides 300 mm of nominal coverage height. Reflective sheeting is applied to the flat front face.

Installation sequence

  1. Step 1The sign height is made up from the number of profiles; profiles are stacked from the bottom up by tongue and groove.
  2. Step 2The reflective sheeting is bonded to the flat front face.
  3. Step 3The panel is fixed to the support post or gantry beam through the mounting channels at the back.

Maintenance and cleaning

  • Keep the sign face legible; clean dirty reflective sheeting according to its manufacturer's instructions without damaging the edges.
  • Check profile joints and rear mounting channels for cracks or separation; assess any looseness in panel and support connections.
  • Assess damaged profiles together with blistered or lifting sheeting; verify that replacement parts match the existing section and sheeting.

Standard reference

  • EN 13706-3
  • EN 13706-2
  • EN ISO 527-4
  • EN ISO 14125
  • EN ISO 14130

EN 13706 is the specification for pultruded profiles: part 2 gives the test methods, part 3 the grade requirements. The grade-minimum values table lists the minimum values of the profile material in grades E23 and E17.

The complete sign — with its sheeting and support — is assessed separately against the authority’s sign specification; the profile alone does not carry that declaration.

Frequently asked

How is the sign size made up?

The sign panel is built from profiles 20, 30 and 60 cm high. The profiles join one above the other by tongue and groove; the required sign height is reached with the number of profiles. The 30 cm profile has a 300 mm module height, 305.5 mm overall with the tongue at the bottom.

Where is the reflective sheeting applied?

The reflective sheeting is bonded to the flat front face of the profile; the mounting channels are on the back. The class and colour of the sheeting come from the authority’s specification for the sign’s location.

What do E23 and E17 mean?

E23 and E17 are grades for pultruded profiles in EN 13706-3; the number is the minimum lengthwise modulus in GPa. The grade-minimum values table gives tensile, flexural, pin-bearing and interlaminar shear values for both grades.

How is the panel fixed to its support?

The panel is fixed to the support post or gantry beam through the mounting channels on the back of the profiles. The 30 cm profile has two channels, 75 and 225 mm above its lower edge.
