The modular GRP anti-glare screen is mounted on top of the concrete barrier on motorways and link roads to stop the headlights of oncoming traffic from affecting the driver. Vertical GRP blades set at an angle along a continuous GRP rail cut off the oncoming headlights. Light and modular, it is easy to install; the module length matches the precast barrier element.

  • Anchored on the concrete barrier
  • Two-sided reflector every 2.5 m
Blade profile125 mm wide, 5 mm wall
Rail profile125 mm wide, 20 mm thick
Blade spacing250 mm (between fixings on the rail)

Key features

  • Cuts headlight glareKeeps oncoming headlights from affecting the driver
  • ModularModule length matches the barrier element; one impact does not take out the whole line
  • Wind-test requirementThe datasheet requires transient deformation ≤ 2.5 % in the wind test
  • Heat-deflection temperature requirementMinimum specified in the datasheet: ≥ 100 °C
  • UV-test requirementThe datasheet requires no visible colour change after 500 hours of UV testing
  • Flame-resistance test requirementThe datasheet requires the GRP profile not to ignite or to self-extinguish
  • Does not rustRail and blades in GRP; metal fixings galvanised
  • Two-sided reflectorEvery 2.5 m, 70×150 mm on both faces of the blade

Installation

Anti-glare screen installation sequence: barrier top levelled, rail anchored, blades and reflector fitted
Installation sequence — the barrier top is levelled, the rail is anchored, the blades are fitted at 25° from the transverse axis and the reflectors are bonded.

Installation sequence

  1. Step 1The top of the barrier is levelled before mounting.
  2. Step 2The GRP rail is fixed to the concrete barrier with M10×100 mm steel expansion anchors about 1 m apart.
  3. Step 3The blades are fitted to the galvanised fixings on the rail at 250 mm spacing, 25° from the transverse axis (65° from the rail direction).
  4. Step 4Reflectors are bonded to both faces of a blade every 2.5 m.

Maintenance and cleaning

  • Check blades, rail and fixings for cracks, loosening or displacement; match replacement parts to the existing AG-600 layout.
  • Check both reflector faces for dirt and lifting edges; clean them according to the instructions for the selected reflective material.
  • After an impact or visible deformation, assess the blades, rail and barrier fixings together; determine repair or replacement of the damaged section through technical review.

Where it is used

  • Motorway medianOn top of the concrete barrier
  • Link roadsWhere opposing traffic runs close
  • BendsWhere oncoming headlights shine straight into the driver’s eyes
  • Tunnel exitsWhere a driver leaving the dark meets oncoming headlights

Standard reference

  • EN 12676-1:2000 + A1:2003
  • EN 12676-2:2000

EN 12676-1 covers optical effectiveness and mechanical characteristics of road anti-glare systems; EN 12676-2 covers test methods. These references are not conformity certificates for AG-600; product-matched reports for optical effectiveness, wind resistance and ageing require verification.

ISO 39001 covers organizational road traffic safety management systems and cannot serve as a product test certificate.

Frequently asked

Where is an anti-glare screen installed?

An anti-glare screen is installed on motorways and link roads on top of the concrete barrier that separates the two directions. Its purpose is to stop the headlights of oncoming traffic from affecting the driver. The top of the barrier is levelled before mounting and the rail is anchored to the concrete with M10×100 mm steel expansion anchors about 1 m apart.

How is the module length of the anti-glare screen chosen?

On precast concrete barrier the module length equals one barrier element. On cast-in-place barrier any length can be made; it is chosen so that one impact does not damage the whole system. When requesting a quotation, state the barrier type and its element length.

How high should the anti-glare screen be?

The blade height is at least 600 mm and is planned against the height of the barrier it sits on. The blade is 125 mm wide with a 5 mm wall; blades are set at 25° from the transverse axis (65° from the rail direction), 250 mm apart.

How are reflectors placed on the anti-glare screen?

Every 2.5 m a 70×150 mm reflective sheet is bonded to both faces of a blade, so the line reads from both directions. The manufacturer’s datasheet requires no blistering or lifting after 48 hours in water and no peeling in a 2×2 cm cross-cut test. For salt spray, it lists test conditions of 22 hours, 2 samples, 5 % sodium chloride solution and 35 °C; that row does not state an acceptance result. Product/batch test-result reports are verified for the quotation scope.
