Strength never comes from one part alone: body, fixing, lock where fitted, foundation and ground act together; on removable types the lock and socket detail matter as much as the concrete. Do not skip a gravel bed under the socket. A socket that traps water rusts, and when it freezes it seizes the bollard inside, so a removable bollard stops being removable.
Material follows the environment. Stainless steel suits coastal sites, salted roads and prominent frontages: corrosion resistant with little upkeep — periodic cleaning is enough. Coated carbon steel is more economical and enough indoors, but starts to corrode at scratches and impact points.
The flexible bollard is a separate variant with a different job: it deters rather than stops — it flexes on contact and rights itself without a mark. The body material (TPU, PE or GRP) and the model identity are put in writing with the datasheet before the order; the adjective "flexible" alone does not identify a model, and a market example of one material is no document for another.
Two layout questions are answered before the order. First, the empty socket: whether a vehicle may pass over the socket once the bollard is out depends on the socket — the permitted drive-over load of a capped socket is on the datasheet, and a socket left uncapped is both a hazard and a damage point. Second, the pedestrian layout: the clear width between bollards (a wheelchair and a pram must pass), the body-to-ground contrast and detectability for blind users follow the authority accessibility rules; a reflective band alone does not make a layout compliant.

There is no harmonised European standard for an ordinary guidance bollard; the requirement comes from the authority’s specification. A vehicle security bollard is a different world.
IWA 14-1 classifies performance under a single horizontal impact, and PAS 68 does the same job in the British system. If a bollard is sold as a security bollard, ask which test it was classified under.
