Technical features

A solar warning lamp announces that an obstacle is still there in the dark. It mounts on barriers, barricades and closed lanes. With no cable to run, installation needs no excavation permit, no route and no supply account.

The panel responds to light level rather than direct sun. It therefore charges on overcast days too, only more slowly. Autonomy without sun depends on panel and battery capacity, the selected mode and temperature; the autonomy figure from the model datasheet is stated in the quotation, and flashing mode lasts markedly longer than steady.

Flashing and steady do different jobs. Flashing marks a single hazard: the mouth of an excavation, the head of a closed lane, the obstacle itself. Steady draws a line. Setting a whole row of unsynchronised lamps to flash can make the line unreadable; systems with synchronised flashing blink the row together and stay legible.

In a specification the lamp type is named by class rather than by colour. For European work the standard referenced for temporary road works lamps is EN 12352. It defines luminous intensity, the angle of visibility and the flash pattern.

A class name alone is not a product document. The optical class, colour and viewing angle of the model sold are tied to the dated standard and to that model’s measurement report identity; the report is shared with the quotation. A lamp whose class is named but whose report cannot be produced stands undocumented before a specification.

An order becomes definite through four choices: night-only or 24-hour operation; single or double face; whether synchronised flashing is needed; and where it mounts. The panel orientation is set toward daylight at installation. The post or support carrying the lamp is a separate item, and who owns the support load calculation is settled in writing before the order.

EN 12352 governs warning and safety light devices. Lamps are classified L1 to L9 by luminous intensity.

L2 splits into low and high, L8 into very low, low, medium and high, and L9 into low, medium and high.

For flashing lamps the measured figure is effective luminous intensity, while steady lamps are rated on the actual value. Work-zone specifications usually ask for a class, so ask which class the device was tested to.
