GRP or concrete? Choosing a delineator material

The two materials do not do the same job. The difference shows most clearly at the moment of impact. One flexes and returns, the other breaks and damages the vehicle that struck it.

Why is concrete still used at all?

The honest answer: habit and local supply tradition. The cost table puts concrete ahead on no line: the product costs more, the freight is heavy, installation is laborious work of excavation and formwork, it breaks on impact and leaves rubble when removed. On a live road edge a broken post is a safety problem on top.

White or yellow?

On high-altitude, foggy and snowy routes the yellow body is preferred. In fog it is markedly easier for a driver to pick out. Reflectors sit on both faces: the concave front face toward the driver is red and the rear face white — the driver sees red in the row on their right and white on their left.

Common mistakes, and what to ask for

The commonest mistake in comparing materials is assuming concrete is "cheap".

A concrete post costs more as a product to begin with; on top of that come heavy freight, excavation-formwork-concrete labour and long installation time — and it breaks at the first impact.

The GRP post is cheaper both as a product and to install, and the gap widens further once the total (product + freight + installation + replacement) is calculated.

The second mistake is ignoring what happens after an impact. A broken concrete post does not merely lose itself.

It damages the vehicle, leaves debris on the road and removes the guidance at that point until it is renewed. A flexing body removes all three outcomes.

Colour permanence is part of the comparison too. A painted surface shows a different colour beneath when scratched and the route looks patchy.

A material carrying pigment through the body is marked by a scratch without changing colour. The difference is invisible in the first year and obvious by the third.

The decision also follows the climate. Where it freezes, water entering a concrete post expands and cracks the body; in a hot climate the sun fades the paint.

Material choice is therefore made by reading the weather record as well as the traffic.

Installation time is part of the comparison as well. A light body is carried by one person and set in minutes with a driving cap. A heavy one needs a crew and plant.

The time the road stays closed changes directly with that difference.

Removal and reuse enter the calculation too. A driven GRP post pulls out and is re-driven on another route, and the barrier-top bolted type unbolts for reuse as well.

A buried concrete post leaves nothing but rubble when it comes out.

The last item in the comparison is safety. Broken concrete scattered on the road becomes a hazard for the next vehicle. A flexing body stays in place after impact and leaves nothing on the carriageway.

This comparison is not repeated for every product. The material decision is made once and held along the route. Using two materials on one road splits both the appearance and the maintenance plan.
